Given the size of the country and its low population density, Canada has had a long history of distance education. In fact, Athabasca University (founded in 1970 in Alberta, Canada) was one of the very first distance education institutions in the world. The first fully online course in the world was taught in 1984 at the University of Toronto. Currently, most leading universities of the world have some distance education capabilities but as the Covid-19 pandemic amply demonstrated, many educational institutions were not adequately prepared for online delivery.
We believe that the ideal education system consists of a combination of self-directed learning using educational materials prepared by experts, peer learning through discussions in a small class setting, and guided learning provided by an experienced teacher. We think that traditional schools have completed their useful lives, and they will be supplemented by hybrid systems that take full advantage of the educational technologies (such as video, artificial intelligence, and extended reality) active learning methods (such as flipped learning), peer learning through small group collaboration, and an optimal combination of online and face-to-face learning.
